Genie's Wishes
Posted 02/15/2013 09:14AM

On Thursday February 14, 2013 Purnell students performed the play ‘Genie’s Wishes’ for children from the Kids House Nursery School.  Written and practiced by the students in only four class periods, Genie’s Wishes is about a genie who is unhappy working for the Wicked Witch of the West.  She escapes her fabled ‘mirror on the wall’ to seek an owner worthy of her magic wishes.  She meets a variety of characters along the way including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, the Little Mermaid and Peter Pan…but all of them have selfish desires and do not prove worthy.  Finally, the Wicked Witch of the West learns the error of her own selfish ways, and exclaims that all she wants in life is for her sister to learn that she is beautiful on the inside as well as the outside.

The play was interactive as the genie asked the children to decide which characters were worthy of their wishes.  The children loved the play and enjoyed theatre games with the students afterwards.  The writing and performing of Genie's Wishes was actually the students' midterm exam - but such a good time was had by all, you would never know it was a test.
