Like everything at Purnell, the college acceptance process is personal and individualized. We assist each student in finding the program at the college or university that is most appropriate for her interests and needs. Our experience tells us that there is the right college for every girl who wants to attend.
Although there are many colleges that are test optional and some schools consider recommendations, essays and transcripts much more strongly than the SAT/ACT, we want to make sure our students are prepared should they want to sit for either test. Our students take the PSAT in both the 10th and 11th grades so they are more comfortable with taking standardized tests. This test also serves as a benchmark for those planning to take the SAT or ACT. Students have the opportunity to take a diagnostic test offered by an outside test preparation company that will help them determine whether they will be more successful on the SAT or ACT. Additionally, we offer both SAT and ACT test preparation courses on campus.
Juniors take the College Process class during the winter and spring of the eleventh grade. In this course students determine what they are looking for in a college, figure out possible majors, and research colleges based on their interests. Students also present information about two colleges to their classmates, practice interviewing skills, and begin visiting various colleges. All students are encouraged to meet with the many colleges and universities that visit our campus throughout the year. Finally, juniors are expected to attend the New Jersey National College Fair where they will meet representatives from various colleges around the world.
Senior English at Purnell places special emphasis on writing for a public audience and students work on college essays and applications under the guidance of the College Guidance Office, the English Department and the Affinities Coordinator during the fall term. We assist the Seniors in all aspects of the college application process throughout the year from helping the students with their initial applications to choosing the college at which they'll matriculate. Purnell understands the anxiety surrounding this process and we work closely with families to ensure that all the students' and parents' needs are being met.
