"The Wiz" Headlines Project Exploration Showcase February 25, 2006
THE WIZ is a super soul musical based on L. Frank Baum’s beloved children’s classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The musical premiered with an all-black cast on Broadway in 1974 with book by William F. Brown and Music and Lyrics by Charlie Smalls. Staying true to the essence of the original book, this funky version urbanizes the landscape, characters and dialogue. Purnell's production takes a post-twentieth century look at the story and examines how the Wiz, like technology, cannot provide all the answers. Dorothy and her friends have all the tools they need, they just need to believe in themselves.
