Purnell junior Eun Young Cho received top honors in Coca Cola's Art of Harmony Art Competition for her mixed media piece based upon George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. The competition is open to high school students in New York and New Jersey drawing thousands of entries. Cho's piece was among twelve winners selected.
Coca Cola introduced the Art of Harmony, an art competition for high school teens, in 1992, in New York, and it has spread to other U.S. cities. The program helps develop teens' artistic talent, financial incentives for higher learning and a chance for self-expression. This year's theme was "Living In Harmony."
Cho described her work thus: "In my piece, I depicted music and nature. I represented the piano and trumpet's dynamic movement and depicted nature with many kinds of materials. I used cardboard, acrylic paint, newspaper and yarn to convey my idea of many different things coming together to make one piece of art."
Of the song Rhapsody in Blue, she noted, "This song has a very dynamic rhythm and delightful melody. The rhythm and melody are both beautiful as separate pieces but combined they create a living statement. They are in harmony. I believe that "Living in Harmony" means maintaining separate melodies but that together we are joyful."
