"Sports remain a great metaphor for life's more difficult lessons. It was through athletics that many of us first came to understand that fear can be tamed; that on a team the whole is more than the sum of its parts; and that the ability to be heroic lies, to a surprising degree, within."
---Susan Casey, Author

Current 2009-2010 Sports Schedules

The Purnell Athletic Department is driven by the following goals:
1. Strive to create in each girl a commitment to her own physical well-being.
2. Develop programs that meet each girl's physical education interests and needs.
3. Instill in each girl the value of hard work as a means of achieving her goals.
4. Promote the development of individual athletic skills, sportswomanship, teamwork, school pride, and an atmosphere of success.
5. Create opportunities for girls to experience new sports and grow in those in which they are already skilled.

The overarching mission of the Purnell Athletic Department, guided by the aforementioned goals, is for each individual student to experience the benefits of physical fitness, healthy living, and the camaraderie that comes from being a part of a team.  A variety of athletic activities, from non-competitive offerings to competitive team sports affords Purnell students of every athletic ability and interest the opportunity to find a sport that suits them best.

Purnell's athletic facilities include five outdoor tennis courts, two sport fields, the Sessions softball field and outdoor batting cage, a ropes course and an indoor athletic center.  The Moran Athletic Center boasts a 1000 square foot gymnasium, an aerobics studio, a cardio/weight room, and a dedicated dance studio.   Dance Synthesis is Purnell's competitive dance troupe that, while run through the Performing Arts Department, takes place during sports time. Purnell's riding program occurs off-campus at nearby Tranquility Farm, where qualified instructors teach beginning through advanced hunt seat equitation in indoor and outdoor riding facilities.
