Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

I would like to personally welcome you to Purnell School where Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are more than just words, but rather an integral part of our community ethics and unity.

Here at Purnell School, we believe that our Founding Guidelines of Truthfulness in All Relations, Consideration of Others, and Use of Common Sense align with creating a supportive, inclusive and antiracist environment. We are committed to fulfilling our mission, founding guidelines and diversity statement. We promote access and equity for all students to all academic, student life, and leadership opportunities.

At Purnell, we encourage acceptance and understanding of differences pertaining to race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, geographical origin, learning differences, and sexual orientation at all institutional levels. Through trainings, lectures, special programs, and short and long term strategic goals, we aim to create a campus climate and atmosphere where all members of the community feel accepted and affirmed.

Particular areas of emphasis are:

  • recruiting and retention of students, faculty, and staff

  • diversifying course offerings and sources of curriculum

  • engaging alumnae

  • supporting student affinity groups

  • sponsoring events and activities that highlight and celebrate diversity and multiculturalism

  • facilitate regular “Courageous Conversations” for all students on current events and important issues

I invite you to join us as we collectively move Purnell forward. Please feel free to contact me anytime at cbeverly@purnell.org.

Statement of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Purnell School strongly believes that the promotion of diversity, equity and inclusion aligns with our founding principles: Truthfulness in All Relations, Consideration of Others, and Use of Common Sense. Furthermore, we believe that cultural competency is critical as we seek to educate and prepare our students for a dynamic and global world. Purnell School strives to create a community environment that is affirming and inclusive, where each member feels safe and valued. To that end, Purnell School strives to embrace difference. Purnell School recognizes and defines diversity broadly, including (but not limited to) age, ethnicity, family structure, learning differences, gender identity, national origin, physical ability, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic background. It is the school’s expectation that all members of the Purnell Community will commit to this diversity philosophy. Purnell School believes that it is crucial to promote a culturally rich, intellectually diverse living and learning community in which we provide a curriculum that reflects multiple cultures and connectedness.
