Academics

Being a student at an all-girls school is empowering. You will look around and notice that every leadership position is filled by a girl. Every advanced course is filled with courageous, curious girls.

Though you may not know it at the time you enroll, you have the support and encouragement to learn and succeed in areas you may never have dreamed of. Purnell School is here to support you in your own journey of self-discovery.

At Purnell, each student engages with an innovative, college preparatory curriculum taught by expert faculty who are dedicated to providing opportunities for learning and success based on the Universal Design for Learning. Within our rich curricula in STEM, the humanities, and studio and performing arts, students explore the “how“ and “why” of the course content with in-depth analysis and discussion.

Course content is presented in multiple formats, and teachers and students work together to individualize the curriculum. Each student is given multiple ways to show what she knows. The result is an academic environment where each student is met where she is to strengthen, enrich, and expand her skills and her sense of wonder.

We empower each young woman to discover how she learns best and accommodate our teaching to her individual needs. This approach is ideal for all learners, and also provides an ideal place for girls with dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, ADHD and executive functioning learning differences to thrive in our safe, nurturing learning environment. Our learning specialists in English and math also provide individual and small group sessions for support and enrichment.

At Purnell, the class sizes are small and students pursue a highly individualized education in which they can learn rhetorical analysis in English, explore the components of government and the electoral process in history, design and build rockets in STEM, choreograph dance performances, create ceramics on the wheel, and develop their own photographs in the darkroom.

All students have access to our learning support programs which include:

  • One-on-one tutoring to bolster reading and writing skills

  • Specialized math instruction

  • Orton-Gillingham approaches to learning

  • Executive Function coaching

  • Multi-sensory, inquiry-based classrooms

  • Individualized Advisor Program

  • Learning & Enrichment Center (LEC)

  • Expert supports for dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, processing challenges

Purnell is committed to providing each student access to a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and the encouragement to grow and wonder. We offer unrivaled support and opportunities for discovery for young women, not only in academics but through our proprietary Learning and Wellness program. Every Purnell graduate enters the world of college and career with passion and confidence in herself and her abilities.
